Preparations
Use these notes before your tattoo appointment so your skin is ready, your session is smoother, and you feel more comfortable when you arrive.
Preparing for a tattoo
Before Your Appointment
Stay hydratedHydrated skin takes ink a lot better than dehydrated skin. Drink plenty of water a few days leading up to your appointment.
Shave, if neededIf the area being tattooed has hair, you may shave before your appointment, but avoid irritating or wounding the skin. You may also ask your tattoo artist to shave the area for you.
Shower before your sessionClean skin matters because tattooing creates open skin. Avoid strong perfume as well so everyone can stay comfortable during the appointment.
Moisturize your skinDo not moisturize on the day of your tattoo, but keep your skin moisturized in the days leading up to your appointment. Hydrated, moisturized skin takes ink better and is easier to work with.
Dress for your sessionDress comfortably and dress for the tattoo placement. Avoid restrictive clothing over areas where you plan to get tattooed.

What to Avoid
- Do not consume alcohol, coffee, aspirin, or blood-thinning medications 24 hours before your session. These can thin your blood and may cause complications.
- Do not touch your tattoo during your appointment. This may introduce bacteria into open skin.

Bring comfort itemsYou may bring a small blanket or sweater, and headphones if you need a distraction from the pain.
